About Tokyo Joe's Karate
Become The Best Version of Yourself
Tokyo Joe's has been offering karate classes for kids, teens and adults in the Concord NH area for 22 years. We are an exceptional school and believe a good fit for the newcomer, parents, our current students, and our staff is paramount. We strive to take martial arts back to its roots as both a physical and spiritual art form.
Martial arts training can give you the tools you or your child need to stay present and focused and true to yourself and your beliefs while standing in the face of life's challenges. It is this self-awareness and confidence that allows you to make the best decisions in stressful situations; and to defend yourself if needed. We're here to help you on your own personal journey!
Kempo Classes
Juniors
Ages 5-9
Junior classes are for our little ninjas of all ranks and experience. Students are encouraged to learn at their own pace and effort is always rewarded! Typical Junior classes include warm-ups, skill development, material time, and game time!
Teens
Ages 10-16
The Teen class is a more self-directed environment for growing minds and bodies. Again, students are encouraged to learn at their own pace and challenge themselves to be the best version of themselves possible! These classes can include warm-ups, group technique time, individual training, skill development, ground techniques, and an occasional game for fun!
Adults
Ages 16+
This class allows adults to work at their own pace while having fun with like minded folks. Warm-ups are varied and an integral part of the class. Students learn when to push themselves and when to ease off. Other components of the class are group technique time and individual training time. Our adults are supportive and fun to work with!
Combat Jiu-Jitsu Class
Modern Army Combatives
This is the MACP material taught to American soldiers and includes techniques from the military for containing and subduing an opponent. Master Shihan includes clinch drills, disarming, stand-up, take-downs, and ground fighting in this class. You do not have to be a current Kempo student to enroll in this class.
Our Staff
Master Shihan Alan Gomes
In May of 2022, Master Shihan Alan earned his 6th degree Black Belt the old fashioned way - he earned it! In other words he put in his time, met training and teaching requirements, and he tested for two days under 10th degree Grand Master Robert LaMattina, a.k.a. Tokyo Joe.
Master Shihan Alan brings decades of working with youth, his military service and training, and his combat jiu-jitsu instructor experience to each class. His infectious personality makes classes fun for kids, teens, and adults!
Senseis & Student Teachers
Our school provides you with the best senseis and student instructors anywhere! Our 2nd & 3rd degree Black Belt senseis have years of experience in their own training as well as teaching. Each one brings something special to the classes they teach!
Our staff of student teachers is a phenomenal group of Purple Belt through 1st Degree Black Belts who believe that teaching is not only a calling; but an honor. They bring their personal experiences, a desire to help and care for others, and their love of kempo to each and every class!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost and how can it be paid?
Tuition is paid monthly via check, cash, or money order. Kempo tuition is $150 for the first student in a family. The family cost to add a second student is $75. Combatives tuition is $100 monthly for the first student in a family. The tuition drops to $50 for the 2nd student, or current Kempo students.
What about uniforms?
Once the free trial is over and the individual is accepted as a student and the first month's tuition is paid, the first uniform will be provided at no additional cost.
At what age can children start classes?
Our Junior classes begins at age 5, if they're ready! Assessments will be made during the free trial period; for kids and adults alike.
How are new ranks/belts given?
Students earn the right to test for their next rank by demonstrating retention of both their prior and current curriculum. Students earn their first belt, the White Belt, by demonstrating respect for self, others, and the school; and by showing effort in all they do.
What is the free trial period?
The free trial period is a minimum of 2 free classes necessary to assess a student's readiness for class and compatibility with our program and philosophy. ALL students are assessed regardless of age. We won't train anyone we deem not ready, who may misuse what we teach them, or who may negatively impact our school.
Do I need to be physically fit?
In a word: no. The warm-ups are integral to class, though everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace and especially for adults; to listen to their bodies. Alternative exercises for injuries are common. Physical fitness will increase over time!
